The new Cross-Cutting initiative “Design to Produce” (D2P) brings Industry 4.0 and the smart factory concepts to space.
The success of the Design to Produce initiative to substantially reduce life cycle costs and schedules also requires a change in mind-sets (strong direct customer involvement, front-loading of developments, extensive infusion of processes from non-space industries especially on automation, miniaturization, machine to machine/human interaction, connectivity, interoperability, big data, augmented reality), an extensive use of digital manufacturing processes and the infusion of approaches from non-space industries.

MASTER PLAN, 2016
The CARD-SAT® 1U satellite structure measures 10 mm in thickness and 100 mm in width and length.
Engineers face a challenge in designing a compact satellite structure that includes all necessary subsystems to meet its data measurement and radio communication capabilities.
The CARD-SAT® 2U satellite structure is twice as long as 1U while maintaining the same height and width.
More space on the PCB, more solar cells, more power, and longer antennas are available for the design engineers.
The largest of the models, the CARD-SAT® 3U, measures three 1U units.
This is suitable for adding sophisticated electronics and active attitude systems.
